Sun Microsystems is a billion dollar global leader in network computing solutions, with offices in 170 countries. The innovative UK Engineering Group (who had led the world with the Netra telco thin-server product line) developed the Sun Fire B1600 Blade System - Sun's first blade server product. The high-density chassis housed up to 16 blades (individual computers), with redundant integrated Ethernet switches, System Controllers (computers to manage the chassis) and PSUs.

Project Brief

The B1600 was Sun's first platform which incorporated a complex network inside the box. It redefined the boundaries between system and network management. The network within the box was now owned by the system administrator. This required a re-think of the standard division of system and network management. Complex network protocols such as spanning tree algorithms, packet filtering, address tables and link aggregation, needed to be simplified and presented to the systems administrator using language and concepts that they would understand. I owned the platform's system management interfaces and led teams developing CLI and web-based interfaces for the integrated switches and service processors. This was an international project, where I coordinated between third party developers in Taiwan, corporate headquarters in California and project teams who were dispersed across the UK and Ireland.
