Sun Microsystems is a billion dollar global leader in network computing solutions, with offices in 170 countries. The innovative UK Engineering Group led the world with the development of the Netra server product line. These systems were targetted at the Telecommunication Providers and Internet Service Providers.

Project Brief

The Netra servers were designed for deployment in unmanned, remote locations. Typically, they would run highly available digital services such as text messaging or mail servers. To guarantee uptime, the system administrators must be able to monitor remotely the health of the servers. They needed access to hardware configuration, environmental and fault information and to perform corrective actions. To restore service, they had to be able to power-cycle and reset the servers.

I led a team which developed a platform SNMP agent. This provided the required management features using industry standards from the ITU-T, DMTF and IETF. The interfaces were highly innovative in using SNMP to present an object-oriented model.
